What is the ASTM B6 standard?

2. High Grade (HG)
Zinc content (minimum): 99.90%
Applications: Used for alloys and chemical products with slightly lower purity requirements.

3. Prime Western (PW)
Zinc content (minimum): 98.0%
Applications: Traditional galvanizing raw material, now largely replaced by SHG due to its higher impurity content, which affects coating quality and zinc pot maintenance.

In today's galvanizing industry, unless otherwise specified, "zinc ingot" usually refers to ASTM B6 Special High Grade (SHG).

b. Physical form and marking: Specifies the shape, weight, size, and information that must be marked on the zinc ingot (such as brand, grade, batch number) to ensure traceability.

c. Sampling and Testing Methods: This section details how to scientifically sample from a batch of zinc ingots and how to verify chemical composition compliance using methods such as spectral analysis.

Why is ASTM B6 Crucial for the Galvanized Pipe Industry?

1. Quality Control at the Source: The quality and lifespan of galvanized pipe (GI) primarily depend on the quality of the zinc coating. Using zinc ingots conforming to ASTM B6 SHG standards is the most fundamental prerequisite for obtaining a high-quality, dense, and corrosion-resistant coating.


2. Process Stability: High-purity zinc ingot molten metal is more stable, producing less zinc dross (generated by the reaction of impurities such as iron with zinc), improving galvanizing efficiency, reducing downtime for dross removal, and protecting galvanizing equipment.


3. Compliance with Downstream Standards: Many standards for galvanized finished products (such as ASTM A123/A123M, "Specification for Hot-Dip Galvanizing of Steel Products"), while not directly referencing B6, implicitly require the use of high-quality zinc ingots. Using B6 SHG zinc ingots is a common practice and reliable guarantee for meeting these finished product standards.
