Many square tubes are cold-rolled from round tubes, an additional step. Steel mills produce the round tubes through welding (ERW) or a seamless process. The round tubes are then passed through a series of dies and cold-rolled at room temperature to form them into a square shape. This "round-to-square" process incurs additional equipment, die-cutting, energy, and labor costs.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Round Tubes:


1) Advantages

Round tubes have a larger load-bearing surface, evenly distributing loads and allowing for bending. When subjected to high pressure and weight, round tubes resist deformation better, making them more suitable for bending.

1. Excellent torsional resistance
The circular cross-section is perfectly symmetrical in all directions, evenly absorbing torque and possessing the best torsional resistance of all cross-sections. It is commonly used in drive shafts and rotating components.

2. Extremely low fluid resistance

Round tubes have no dead spots, ensuring smooth fluid flow and minimal pressure loss. This is their undeniable advantage as pipes. They are commonly used in water, oil, gas, and chemical pipelines.

3. Uniform stress distribution
With consistent cross-sectional properties in all directions, stress distribution is uniform when applied, with no obvious stress concentration points, resulting in excellent pressure resistance.

4. Mature manufacturing process and low cost
The production processes for seamless round tubes and welded tubes are both mature and efficient, generally offering cost advantages over square tubes.

2) Disadvantages
Due to the smaller connection area of round tubes, their bearing capacity decreases and deforms over time, requiring reinforcement of pipe joints. Furthermore, due to the influence of corners during installation, cracks are easily formed at the joints, making them difficult to connect and requiring non-destructive testing to ensure connection quality.

Relatively poor bending resistance:
When used as a beam, its bending resistance is less efficient than that of a square tube of the same weight.

Difficult to connect and secure:
Round surfaces are difficult to secure, often requiring specialized clamps, curved supports, or complex welding fixtures.

Poor space utilization:
The circular cross-section of a round tube creates gaps when it contacts a flat surface, wasting space. It also makes stacking and storage less compact than square tubes.


Application Scenarios of Square Tubes and Round Tubes:
