How to Calculate MS Square Tube Weight?

To calculate the theoretical weight of a Mild Steel (MS) square tube, you can use the following simplified formulas (corner radii not deducted):

● Metric Formula (kg/m):
Weight (kg/m) = [4 × (Side A – Wall Thickness) × Wall Thickness × 0.00785]
(Where 0.00785 is the density of steel in g/mm³)

● Imperial Formula (lbs/ft):
Weight (lbs/ft) = [4 × (Side A – Wall Thickness) × Wall Thickness × 0.284]

(Where 0.284 is the density of steel in lbs/in³)

MS Square Tube Weight Calculation

● Theoretical Calculation Principle:
The basis of this formula is: Weight (W) = Volume (V) × Density (ρ). The cross-sectional area is calculated as V = a² - (a - 2t)², where a is the side length and t is the wall thickness.

(Note: Actual product weight may vary by approximately ±10% due to manufacturing tolerances and corner geometries.)

Dimensional Tolerances for MS Square Tubing

Dimensional tolerances ensure interchangeability and fabrication accuracy. The standard allowable deviations are generally as follows:

Length: 6 m to 12 m (custom cut lengths available)

Common Compliance Standards: IS 4923, ASTM A500, EN 10219, EN 10210

Item Tolerance
Weight +10%,-8%
Corner Radius 3T maximum
Outer Side Length ±1%
Wall Thickness ±10%
Squareness 90° ± 2°

How to Choose the Right Weight for Your Project?

While lighter weights (e.g., 20×20×2.0 mm at 1.12 kg/m) are ideal for decorative frames and light furniture, heavier sections (e.g., 100×100×10 mm at 27.90 kg/m) are designed for structural columns and heavy machinery. If you are unsure which weight best balances your load-bearing needs and material costs, our engineers are here to help.

FAQ

Q1: Why is the actual weight different from the theoretical weight?
A: The theoretical weight is calculated based on nominal dimensions and a standard steel density of 7.85 g/cm³. However, during the manufacturing process, actual dimensions (especially wall thickness) may vary within standard tolerances. According to our standard, the actual weight tolerance is +10% / -8%. This is why the actual weighing weight may differ slightly from the calculated chart.

Q2: Do you supply MS square tubes with "positive tolerance" (exact thickness)?
A: Yes. By default, our tubes are produced to standard industry tolerances. However, if your project requires strict wall thickness (e.g., 2.5 mm must be exactly 2.5 mm, not 2.3 mm), we can supply "positive tolerance" tubes upon special request. Please specify this clearly when requesting a quote.

Q3: How do I calculate the weight of a custom size not listed in the chart?
A: You can easily calculate it using our metric formula: Weight (kg/m) = [4 × (Side A – Wall Thickness) × Wall Thickness × 0.00785]. For example, for a 110×110×4.0 mm tube, the weight is [4 × (110 - 4) × 4 × 0.00785] = 13.31 kg/m.

Q4: Is the weight difference important for shipping costs?

A: Absolutely. For bulk orders, a 5% difference in weight can significantly affect the total tonnage and ocean freight costs. We recommend using the theoretical weight for initial budgeting, but the final invoice will always be based on actual weighing at the loading port to ensure fairness for both parties.
