ASTM A53——Standard specification for pipe, steel, black and hot dipped, zinc-coated, welded and seamless.
ASTM A53 (ASME SA53) Steel Pipe Specifications:
A53 pipe comes in three types (F, E, S) and two grades (A, B).
Type F—Furnace-butt-welded, continuous welded Grade A.
Type E—Electric-resistance-welded, Grades A and B.
Type S—Seamless pipe, Grades A and B.
ASTM A53 Type S, which is seamless pipe/tube, produced by hot working, and possibly cold finishing, the steel (Grades A and B). ASTM A53 pipe is sized according to the nominal pipe size (NPS) system. It is commonly available with national pipe thread ends or with plain cut ends. It can be used for steam, water, and air conveyance. It is also weldable and can be used in structural applications, although ASTM A500 tube, which is available in the same NPS sizes, is sometime preferred.
Application of ASTM A53 seamless carbon steel pipe:
ASTM A53 seamless pipe is a carbon steel pipe, divided into two types: A53 A and A53 B. A53 A material has relatively low chemical composition requirements and is suitable for low-pressure applications under general working conditions. A53 B material requirements are relatively high and can be used in pipeline systems under high temperature and high pressure. A53 material seamless pipe is suitable for petroleum, natural gas, chemical industry and other fields, and is widely used to transport liquids and gases. ASTM A53 Grade B Seamless is our most popular product under this specification and A53 pipe is commonly dual certified to A106 B Seamless pipe.
ASTM A53 seamless carbon steel pipe production process:
Seamless steel pipe manufacturing process is divided into hot-rolled and cold drawn seamless pipe.
1. Production process of hot-rolled seamless steel pipe: tube billet → heating → perforation → three-roller/cross-rolling & continuous rolling → de-pipe → sizing → cooling → straightening → hydraulic test → marking → seamless steel pipe with leverage effect detected.
2. Production process of cold drawn seamless steel tubes: tube blank → heating → perforation → heading → annealing → pickling → oiling → multiple cold drawing → blank tube → heat treatment → straightening → hydraulic test → marking → storage.
ASTM A53 specification covers seamless and welded black and hot-dipped galvanized steel pipe in NPS 1/8 to NPS 26. The steel categorized in this standard must be open-hearth, basic-oxygen or electric-furnace processed and must have the following chemical requirements: carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, copper, nickel, chromium, molybdenum, and vanadium. The tubing shall undergo a seamless or welding process. Tension, bend, and flattening tests shall be performed to make sure that it must adhere to the mechanical properties of the standard. The hydrostatic test shall be applied, without leakage through the weld seam or the pipe body. Nondestructive electric test shall be made to make sure that the full volume of the pipe must be in accordance with the standard. The purchaser shall have the right to perform any of the inspections and tests set forth in this specification where deemed necessary to ensure that the pipe conforms to the specified requirements.
