Steel pipe dimensions, steel pipe sizes and steel pipe specifications are often used interchangeably in daily communication and engineering documents, but strictly speaking, they are related yet distinct.
Steel Pipe Dimensions: A relatively broad concept, primarily referring to the geometric physical measurements of a steel pipe.
Steel Pipe Specifications: A precise, standardized technical description, encompassing not only dimensions but also defining the pipe's pressure-bearing capacity, material standards, and delivery condition.
Steel Pipe Sizes: Refers to the standardized nominal diameter, a designation.
Representation methods:
Imperial: NPS (Nominal Pipe Size), such as NPS 2, NPS 4.
Metric: DN (Diameter Nominal), such as DN50, DN100.
Key point: The numbers following NPS or DN do not directly equal the inner or outer diameter of the steel pipe.
For example, the outer diameter of an NPS 2" pipe is not 2 inches (50.8 mm), but 60.3 mm.
Outer Diameter: The diameter of the outer circumference of the steel pipe. This is the most basic dimension.
Wall Thickness: The thickness of the steel pipe wall.
Inner Diameter: Can be calculated from outer diameter - 2 × wall thickness. For fluid transport, the inner diameter directly relates to flow rate.
Length: The standard length of the steel pipe, such as 6 meters, 12 meters, etc.
Example: When we say "a steel pipe with an outer diameter of 114mm, a wall thickness of 6mm, and a length of 12 meters," we are describing its dimensions.
2. Steel Pipe Specifications
This is a systematic project, answering the question, "What kind of pipe is this?" A complete specification description includes at least the following four elements:
1) Size Standards and Nominal Diameter
Nominal Diameter: This is not an actual measured value, but a standardized code set for ease of design and selection. For example, DN100 (metric) or NPS 4" (imperial). This represents the pipe's "size specification," but the actual outer diameter is fixed (e.g., the outer diameter of a DN100 pipe is 114.3 mm).
Standard systems: such as American Standard (ASME), German Standard (DIN), and Chinese Standard (GB), which specify the specific outer diameter and wall thickness series corresponding to different nominal diameters.
2) Wall Thickness Series
This is the core of the specification, defining the pipe's pressure-bearing capacity.
Sch: Abbreviation for Schedule, followed by a number, such as Sch40, Sch80, Sch160.
Rule: For the same outer diameter, the larger the number after Sch, the thicker the wall and the higher the pressure-bearing capacity.
Common Series:
Sch40 (STD): Standard weight, most commonly used.
Sch80 (XS): Thickened weight, used for higher pressures.
Sch160 (XXS): Extra-thick weight, used for high-pressure pipelines.
3) Material Standards and Grades
This defines "what material the pipe is made of," directly determining its mechanical properties and applicable media.
Standards: Such as ASTM A106 (high-temperature carbon steel pipe), ASTM A53 (general-purpose carbon steel pipe), ASTM A213 (alloy/stainless steel pipe for boilers).
Grades/Steel Grades: Such as Gr. B, TP304L. Different grades represent different chemical compositions and mechanical properties.
4) Delivery Condition and Special Requirements
Manufacturing Process: Seamless or Welded.
Heat Treatment Condition: Such as annealed, normalized.
End Treatment: Such as plain end, beveled end.
Special Inspection: Such as non-destructive testing requirements.
