How to repair pipeline flange corrosion?

The ideal solution should take into account excellent anti-corrosion protection performance and simple construction procedures, and should be suitable for flanges of various sizes and shapes, and can easily operate bolts during maintenance.


‌The repair methods for pipe flange corrosion mainly include the following:

‌1. Surface repair‌
If there is slight rust or scratches on the flange surface, it can be polished with a grinder to make the surface clean, dry and strong. For small areas of damage, it can be repaired by local surfacing and grinding.

‌2. Machining repair‌

For larger areas of damage, the container needs to be disassembled and transported to the manufacturer for repair. The specific steps include removing cracks, repair welding, heat treatment, machining and reinstallation.

‌3. On-site repair with polymer materials‌
When using polymer materials for on-site repair, first clean the metal gasket and flange connection surface, then apply the polymer material and tighten the bolts to ensure that the material can densely fill the connection position.

‌4. Maintenance paint solution‌
Use epoxy or polyurethane coatings for protection, which can be directly bonded to the substrate to form a hard film protective layer. Although this solution can effectively cover the edges, the coating will be damaged when operating the bolts, and re-coating is required after repair. ‌

5. ‌Mechanical solution‌
The gap between the flange and its surface is sealed by protective covers and clamps, which are usually made of stainless steel or plastic and equipped with rubber sealing strips. This method has poor flexibility and needs to match flanges of various sizes. ‌

‌6. Tape or semi-solid anti-corrosion tape solution‌
Use petrolatum tape, wax or elastic polymer wrapping tape wrapped around the surface of the substrate to provide reliable anti-corrosion protection. Suitable for flanges with complex shapes, but the construction is more time-consuming. ‌

‌7. Hot melt plastic solution‌

The wax-like fusible polymer heated at high temperature is sprayed on the surface of the substrate. The advantage is that it can be remelted and reused, saving costs. ‌


‌8. Polymer sealing bag solution‌
Completely wrap the flange in a sealing bag composed of low-permeability polymer, corrosion inhibitor vapor and desiccant to provide comprehensive protection‌.

‌9. New peelable sealing film system‌

Designed specifically to protect flanges, fasteners and related pipes, the construction is safe and simple, and can be bonded to manually processed substrates without heat processing‌.
