What is spiral welded steel pipe?

Spiral welded steel pipe (SSAW) is a kind of spiral seam steel pipe made of strip steel coil as raw material, extruded at room temperature, and welded by automatic double-wire double-sided submerged arc welding process.

The production process of this kind of steel pipe includes feeding the strip steel into the welded pipe unit. After rolling with multiple rollers, the strip steel is gradually rolled up to form a round pipe blank with an opening gap. By adjusting the reduction amount of the squeeze roller, the weld gap can be controlled within the range of 1~3mm and ensure that both ends of the weld are flush. During the forming process of spiral steel pipe, the steel plate deforms evenly, has small residual stress, has no scratches on the surface, and has flexible thickness and diameter adjustment capabilities. It is especially suitable for manufacturing high-grade thick pipes with small and medium apertures. Due to its unique production process, spiral steel pipe has significant advantages in meeting various specific needs.

What is SCH 80?

SCH 80 (Schedule 80 pipe) represents the wall thickness, which refers to XS thickened pipes with a pressure wall thickness less than DN200mm. Usage scenarios generally involve high temperature, high pressure, and highly corrosive conditions. The wall thickness of SCH 80 grade pipes is relatively thick, and the pressure and temperature in the use environment must comply with ASME/ANSI standards to ensure the safety and reliability of the pipeline system. SCH 80 grade piping systems are often used in the manufacture of chemical equipment, high-pressure pipelines, high-temperature heaters and some special piping systems. When designing and installing a steel pipe system, it is necessary to select the appropriate pipe number according to the actual use environment to ensure the stability and safety of the pipeline system.

Features and applications of SCH 80 spiral welded steel pipe:

Good surface quality, high dimensional accuracy, uniform wall thickness, high productivity and low cost

Applications of SCH 80 spiral welded steel pipe:

1. Spiral welded steel pipes are used in water supply projects, petrochemical industry, chemical industry, electric power industry, agricultural irrigation, urban construction, etc.
2. For liquid transportation: water supply, drainage, sewage treatment projects, mud transportation, ocean water transportation.
3. For gas transportation: coal gas, steam, liquefied petroleum gas.
4. For structural purposes: used as piling pipes, pipes for bridges, docks, roads, building structures, marine piling pipes, etc.
5. Spiral welded steel pipes are processed into anti-corrosion spiral pipes, which can be used for tap water pipes and underground sewage discharge.
6. Spiral welded steel pipe processing can be used for thermal insulation, community heating, heating network laying, and power plant steam transportation.

SCH 40 pipe vs SCH 80 spiral welded steel pipe:

The main difference between SCH 40 and SCH 80 spiral welded steel pipes is the wall thickness. SCH 40 pipe has a thinner wall thickness and is often used in low-pressure applications such as residential plumbing or irrigation systems. SCH 80 spiral welded steel pipe has thicker walls and is used in high-pressure applications such as industrial processes, hydraulic systems and underground piping. They are designed to handle higher pressures and withstand greater stresses than SCH 40 pipe.

Looking at specific dimensions, the wall thickness of SCH 40 pipe is approximately 0.109 inches, while the wall thickness of SCH 80 pipe is approximately 0.154 inches. This means that SCH 80 pipe is approximately 30% thicker than SCH 40 pipe. While SCH 80 pipe is stronger and more durable than SCH 40 pipe, they are also more expensive.

SCH 80 pipe has thicker walls and requires more material and more manufacturing time, which increases costs. When selecting pipe for a specific application, it is important to consider the pressure requirements and the cost-effectiveness of selecting thicker, more expensive pipe.
