ASTM A182/A182M-24A - Standard Specification for Forged or Rolled Alloy and Stainless Steel Pipe Flanges, Forged Fittings, and Valves and Parts for High-Temperature Service

ASTM A182 is a standard developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials, which is mainly used to regulate the material, manufacturing process and performance requirements of forged or rolled alloy steel and stainless steel pipe fittings, pipe flanges and other components for high temperature use. The following are the key points involved in this standard:

Forged pipe fittings are pipe fittings made by forging process, which have higher strength, better density and more reliable quality than cast pipe fittings. These pipe fittings play an important role in connecting, changing flow direction, distributing flow in pipeline systems, and are widely used in industrial fields such as petroleum, chemical, electric power, and natural gas.

Material standards:
ASTM A182 covers a variety of alloy steel and stainless steel grades, including but not limited to:
Carbon steel and low alloy steel: such as F1, F5, F9, F11, F12, etc.
Stainless steel: such as F304/L, F316/L, F317/L, F347, etc.
Duplex stainless steel and super duplex stainless steel: such as F51 (UNS S31803), F53 (UNS S32750), etc.
Each grade has its specific chemical composition requirements to ensure that the material has sufficient strength, corrosion resistance and performance suitable for working in high pressure and high temperature environments.

ASTM A182 stainless steel high pressure forged pipe fittings:
ASTM A182 stainless steel forged pipe fittings are divided into two categories, threaded pipe fittings and socket pipe fittings. These two categories include elbows, tees, crosses, pipe clamps, pipe caps, unions, pipe plugs, bushings, short connections, reducers and other pipe fittings.

ASTM A182 socket and spigot pipe fittings:
The main structure of ASTM A182 socket and spigot pipe fittings includes two parts: the socket and the spigot. The socket is the part of the pipe fitting used to receive the pipe insertion, usually with a certain depth and inner diameter tolerance to ensure a good fit with the inserted pipe. The spigot is the part that connects to other pipe fittings or equipment, and can be designed in different forms according to specific connection requirements. Socket and spigot pipe fittings are widely used in various industrial piping systems, including industries such as petroleum, chemical, and natural gas, as well as building water supply and drainage systems.

ASTM A182 socket and spigot pipe fittings include pipe elbows, tees, crosses, pipe clamps, pipe caps, and unions.

ASTM A182 threaded pipe fittings:
ASTM A182 threaded pipe fittings are a type of pipe fittings manufactured in accordance with the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) A182 standard. Threaded pipe fittings connect various parts of the pipeline system by threaded connection, which has the advantages of easy installation and detachability. In pipeline engineering, it is widely used in various industrial and civil fields, such as petroleum, chemical industry, building water supply and drainage, etc.

ASTM A182 threaded pipe fittings include elbows, tees, crosses, pipe clamps, pipe caps, unions, pipe plugs, bushings, hexagonal nipples, reducers, etc.

ASTM A182 high-pressure forged flanges:
ASTM A182 forged flange types: butt-weld flange (WN), socket flange (SW), flat-weld flange (SO), threaded flange (TH), blind flange (BL), long weld neck flange (LWN), loose flange (LAPJ) SAE flange types.
Size range: 1/2 inch--24 inches. For butt-weld flanges (WN) and blind flanges (BL), the size can reach 60 inches.

Pressure rating:
ASME Flanges: Class 150#, 300#, 600#, 900#, 1500#, 2500#.
API Flanges: Class 75, 150, 300, 600, 900.
JIS Flanges: JIS B2220 5K, 10K, 16K, 20K, 30K
DIN Flanges: 6 Bar, 10 Bar, 16 Bar, 25 Bar, 40 Bar.

BS 4504 Flanges: PN10, PN16

Manufacturing process:

Forging process: Pipe fittings and flanges produced according to A182 standard must undergo a forging process to optimize their microstructure and improve the mechanical properties and long-term strength of the material.
Heat treatment: According to different material grades, appropriate heat treatment operations such as solution annealing and aging treatment are required to adjust the material's organizational state and mechanical properties.
Dimensions and tolerances: The standard specifies various dimensional parameters of flanges and pipe fittings and their allowable manufacturing tolerances to ensure good interchangeability and connectivity between components.
Mechanical property inspection: The finished product needs to be verified by tensile test, impact test, hardness test and other methods to verify whether it meets the specified mechanical property indicators.
Nondestructive testing: When necessary, nondestructive testing such as ultrasonic testing, magnetic particle testing or radiography is required to confirm that the internal quality of the product is qualified and there are no cracks, inclusions or other defects that affect the safety of use.

Application scope of ASTM A182 forged pipe fittings:

1. Oil and gas industry
Socket fittings: In the wellhead device of the oil well, the socket fittings are used to connect the various components of the Christmas tree. Due to the high pressure and complex environment inside the oil well, the socket fittings can provide reliable connections.

Threaded pipe fittings: In the connection between some small equipment at the oil and gas extraction site, such as small oil pumps, gas compressors, etc. and pipelines, threaded pipe fittings are widely used due to their easy installation and detachable characteristics.

2. Chemical industry
Socket fittings: The pipeline system around the chemical reactor needs to frequently transport various corrosive media, high temperature and high pressure materials. Socket fittings are used to connect the inlet and outlet pipes of the reactor to ensure that the reaction materials can enter and exit the reactor safely and stably.

Threaded pipe fittings: In chemical laboratories, threaded pipe fittings are often used for pipeline connections between various small chemical reaction devices and material conveying devices.

3. Power industry
Socket fittings: In nuclear power plants, socket fittings are used to connect nuclear reactors with pipelines such as cooling systems and steam generation systems. Socket fittings play an important role in ensuring that radioactive materials will not leak and coolants can circulate normally.

Threaded pipe fittings: In the oil system of thermal power plants, such as lubricating oil systems and fuel systems, threaded pipe fittings are used to connect some local pipelines.

In short, ASTM A182 provides detailed and strict standard guidance to ensure the quality of alloy steel and stainless steel pipe fittings and pipe flanges used in high temperature environments, ensuring that these components can operate stably and reliably under various harsh working conditions.
