Storage and precautions for seamless stainless steel pipes

Keywords: seamless stainless steel pipe storage and precautions, stainless steel pipe storage, ss pipe rust
Do you think that stainless steel will not rust as its name suggests? In fact, stainless steel is not rust-free, but it is more corrosion-resistant and not easy to rust. If it is placed or stored improperly, it will also rust. So how can the seamless stainless steel pipe be stored for a longer time? What are the precautions for the storage of seamless stainless steel pipes? Here are some knowledge about stainless steel storage!

The methods for storing seamless stainless steel pipes mainly include the following aspects:

1. Outer packaging and protective layer of steel pipes

General stainless steel pipes will be polished during the production process. The main purpose of this polishing is to remove impurities in the stainless steel itself and form a protective film on the surface of the stainless steel pipe. Before leaving the factory, a unified packaging bag will be used to wrap the stainless steel pipe as a whole. The purpose is to isolate the stainless steel pipe from the outside world again and prevent the stainless steel pipe from being corroded. This is an important measure to prevent material corrosion from the first source.

Sealed packaging: The packaging of stainless steel materials should be sealed, moisture-proof, and light-proof to avoid being affected by the external environment. Common packaging materials include plastic film, bubble paper, wooden boxes, etc. The appropriate packaging method can be selected according to the shape of the material and storage conditions.

During transportation and loading and unloading, attention should be paid to protection and no damage should be done, which can extend the storage period of the materials.

2. Choose a suitable site and warehouse
Clean: The warehouse should be ventilated on sunny days, moisture-proof on rainy days, clean, with smooth drainage, away from harmful gases or dusty factories and mines, and the site should be cleaned to keep the steel clean. Corrosive materials such as acids, alkalis, salts, etc. should not be stored in the warehouse.

Dry and ventilated: Avoid humid environments, because stainless steel is prone to rust and corrosion under long-term humid conditions. Therefore, the storage place should be kept dry and well ventilated.

‌Avoid direct sunlight‌: Strong sunlight will accelerate the aging of stainless steel, causing discoloration and oxidation on its surface. Therefore, during storage, shades should be used to block the sun and maintain a cool environment.

3. Keep the warehouse clean and strengthen the maintenance of stainless steel pipes
Before entering the warehouse, check whether the stainless steel pipe materials are soaked or stained. If the stainless steel pipes have the above problems, they need to be wiped in different ways according to their characteristics. For example, wire brushes can be used for high hardness, and cloth, cotton, etc. can be used for low hardness.

Stainless steel pipes should be checked frequently after entering the warehouse. If there is rust, the rust layer should be cleaned in time. Generally, after the surface of steel is cleaned, it is not necessary to apply oil, but for high-quality steel, alloy steel plates, thin-walled stainless steel pipes, alloy steel pipes, etc., after sodium removal, the inner and outer surfaces must be coated with anti-rust oil before storage; for steel pipes with more serious rust, it is not suitable to store for a long time after rust removal, and should be used as soon as possible.

‌Fire safety‌: Pay attention to fire prevention, prohibit open fire operations in the storage area, and ensure the safety of the storage environment‌.

4. Control temperature and humidity‌
‌Temperature control‌: The storage temperature of stainless steel materials is generally required to be between minus 5 degrees and room temperature. Too low or too high temperature will affect the quality of the material. Especially in the hot season, stainless steel materials should be avoided from being exposed to the sun or high temperature environment for a long time.

‌Humidity control‌: Stainless steel materials also have very high requirements for humidity, generally requiring humidity between 40% and 60%. Too high humidity can cause corrosion and discoloration on the surface of the material, while too low humidity may cause cracking and cracking on the surface of the material.

5. Reasonable stacking
The principle of stacking is to stack by variety and specification under the condition of stable and safe stacking to prevent confusion and corrosion, which is also conducive to our usual search.

Classification storage‌: Different varieties of stainless steel materials should be stacked separately to prevent confusion and contact with corrosive substances. For example, stainless steel pipes, steel plates, steel sections, etc. should be stored separately to avoid friction and collision with each other.

Reasonable stacking‌: Avoid stacking too high to avoid deformation or other damage. At the same time, ensure that the stacking is stable to prevent collapse.

Precautions for stacking:
a. It is forbidden to store items that are corrosive to steel near the stacking position;
b. The bottom of the stack should be raised, solid and flat to prevent the material from getting damp or deforming;
c. The same materials should be stacked separately according to the order of storage to facilitate the implementation of the first-in-first-out principle;
d. For steel sections stacked in the open air, there must be wooden pads or stone strips underneath, and the stack surface should be slightly inclined to facilitate drainage. Pay attention to placing the materials straight to prevent bending and deformation;
e. The stacking height should not exceed 1.2m for manual operation and 1.5m for mechanical operation, and the stack width should not exceed 2.5m;
f. There should be a certain passage between stacks. The inspection passage is generally 0.5m, and the access passage depends on the size of the material and the transportation machinery, generally 1.5~2.0m;
g. The bottom of the stack should be raised. If the warehouse is a sunny cement floor, it can be raised by 0.1m; if it is a mud floor, it must be raised by 0.2~0.5m. If it is an open-air site, the cement floor should be raised by 0.3~0.5m, and the sand and mud surface should be raised by 0.5~0.7m;
h. Angle steel and channel steel should be placed face down when stacked in the open air, that is, the mouth should face down, and I-beams should be placed upright, and the I-groove surface of the steel should not face up to avoid rust caused by accumulated water.

The above methods can effectively extend the service life of stainless steel seamless pipes and maintain their good performance.
