Differences in service life between seamless steel pipes and spiral welded steel pipes

Keywords: seamless steel pipe vs spiral welded steel pipe service life
Seamless steel pipe (SMLS) vs spiral welded steel pipe (SSAW), which one has longer service life?

Under normal circumstances, the service life of seamless steel pipes is relatively long, especially when used in harsh environments such as high temperature, high pressure, corrosion, etc., the performance of seamless steel pipes is more stable and durable.

Features of seamless steel pipes and spiral welded steel pipes:

Seamless steel pipe, also known as cold-drawn seamless steel pipe, is a steel pipe made by cold-rolling, cold-drawing or cold-extrusion process. It has the characteristics of smooth surface, uniform inner and outer wall thickness, pressure resistance, wear resistance, and seamless gap. It is usually used in Under harsh environments such as high temperature, high pressure, and corrosion. The spiral welded steel pipe is a steel pipe formed by spirally curling a steel strip and then forming it by electric welding. Its heat treatment and surface treatment are slightly less than seamless steel pipes, but it is suitable for transporting general fluids and gases.

The difference in service life between seamless steel pipes and spiral welded steel pipes:
1. Different processing techniques
Seamless steel pipes are made using a special production process and have high strength and toughness, as well as smooth surfaces and uniform inner and outer wall thicknesses. During the processing and installation process, there are fewer welding processes compared to spiral welded steel pipes, and its strength and reliability are relatively high.

2. Different corrosion resistance properties
In corrosive environments, the corrosion resistance of seamless steel pipes is more stable and more corrosion-resistant than spiral welded steel pipes. The gaps in spiral welded steel pipes are prone to corrosion, which affects their service life.

3. Different scope of application
Seamless steel pipes have higher strength, so they are suitable for harsh environments such as high pressure resistance, high temperature resistance, and corrosion resistance. The spiral welded steel pipe has lower strength and is suitable for transporting ordinary fluids and gases.

4. Service life
Generally speaking, seamless steel pipes have a longer service life. Because the manufacturing process of seamless steel pipes is relatively complex, the quality of high-end products is relatively stable and the service life is long; while the production process of spiral welded steel pipes is relatively simple, the quality is uneven, it is easily affected by environmental factors, and the service life is relatively short. However, in some special use environments and careful maintenance, the lifespan of the two will also change.

Conclusion:

In summary, seamless steel pipes and spiral welded steel pipes each have their own advantages and disadvantages, and they need to be selected according to the specific use environment. If it needs to be used in harsh environments such as high temperature, high pressure, corrosion, etc., seamless steel pipes should be a better choice; if it is used to transport ordinary gases, fluids, etc., spiral welded steel pipes can be selected.
