PSL1 vs. PSL2 Seamless Steel Pipe

Keywords: PSL1 vs PSL2 seamless steel pipe, seamless pipe PSL1 and PSL2, API 5L PSL1 vs PSL2 SMLS Pipe

Difference between Seamless Steel Pipe (SMLS) PSL1 and PSL2:

Core differences between PSL1 and PSL2:

1. Standard grade classification

- PSL1 (Product Specification Level 1) is the basic grade in the API 5L standard, suitable for general oil and gas transportation.

- PSL2 (Product Specification Level 2) is an advanced grade with stricter requirements on chemical composition, mechanical properties and testing, suitable for high pressure, low temperature or corrosive environment.

2. Comparison of mechanical properties

- Compressive strength: PSL2 has higher requirements, for example, the compressive strength of X52 steel grade PSL2 needs to be ≥460 MPa, while PSL1 only needs ≥414 MPa (data source: API 5L 46 edition).
- Impact toughness: PSL2 requires Charpy impact test (minimum 27J at -20℃), while PSL1 does not have this requirement.

3. Chemical composition control
- PSL2 has stricter limits on the content of impurities such as sulfur and phosphorus (sulfur ≤ 0.015%, phosphorus ≤ 0.025%), while PSL1 allows slightly higher limits (sulfur ≤ 0.03%, phosphorus ≤ 0.03%).

Does PSL1 meet gas standards?

1. Applicability of gas transportation

- According to GB/T 9711-2017 and ASME B31.8 standards, PSL1 can be used for low-pressure gas pipelines (design pressure ≤ 1.6 MPa), but the following conditions must be met:
- The operating temperature is higher than -10℃;
- There is no risk of dynamic load or low-temperature impact.

- Note: PSL2 is usually required for high-pressure gas pipelines (such as long-distance pipelines) to ensure safety.

2. Practical application suggestions

- If the project budget is limited and the working conditions are mild, PSL1 is an economical choice;
- If it involves high pressure, high cold or densely populated areas, PSL2 must be selected and non-destructive testing (such as ultrasonic testing) must be added.

How to choose the right grade?

1. Comparison of key parameters of PSL1 and PSL2

Parameters
PSL1
PSL2
Compressive strength (X52)
≥414 MPa
≥460 MPa
Impact test
Optional
Mandatory (-20℃, 27J)
Sulfur content
≤0.03%
≤0.015%
Testing requirements
Basic water pressure test
Water pressure + non-destructive testing

2. Other influencing factors

- Cost: The price of PSL2 is about 15%-20% higher than that of PSL1;
- Life: PSL2 has a longer life in corrosive environments and lower maintenance costs.

Conclusion:

The selection of PSL1 and PSL2 requires comprehensive pressure, environment and regulatory requirements. PSL1 can be used in low-pressure scenarios in the gas field, but PSL2 must be used in high-pressure or high-risk scenarios to ensure safety.
