Can seamless steel pipes be grooved?

Seamless pipe (smls pipe) is a high-strength, high-pressure steel pipe that is often used in pipeline systems for transporting gases, liquids, solids and other media. Seamless steel pipes are produced through cold/hot rolling and drawing processes. They have smooth surfaces, smooth inner and outer walls, high dimensional accuracy, and good corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. Therefore, seamless steel pipes are indispensable in some situations where high pressure and high flow are required.

Seamless steel pipes (ASTM A106) can be processed and modified, such as cutting, drilling, chamfering, welding, etc., but can they be grooved? The answer is yes. Seamless steel pipes can be grooved, and the surface of the pipe is cut into grooves of different shapes to increase the inner surface area and resistance of the pipe and improve the transmission efficiency of the fluid. The processing methods of grooves mainly include cutting method, rolling method, mold opening method, etc.

Seamless steel pipe groove methods:

The following are commonly used seamless steel pipe groove methods:

1. Cutting method: Use machine tools or cutting tools to cut the surface of the pipe into the required groove shape. This method is suitable for situations where the groove shape is complex, the size is irregular, or the accuracy is high.

2. Rolling method: Use rolling grinding tools such as steel balls and steel wheels to process the surface of the pipe and roll out grooves on the surface. This method is suitable for situations where the groove shape is relatively simple, the size is regular, or the precision requirements are not high.

3. Mold opening method: Use a mold to press the surface of the pipe into the required groove shape. This method is suitable for the production of large batches of pipes with the same specifications, such as floor heating pipes.

The influence of seamless steel pipe grooves:

Although seamless steel pipe grooves can improve the fluid transmission efficiency of the pipeline and prevent clogging, it will also have a certain impact on the performance of the pipeline.
1. Reduction in strength: Because the processing of grooves will weaken the material on the surface of the pipe, its strength will be reduced. Therefore, the effect of grooves on the structural strength of the pipeline must be considered during design and application, especially in high-pressure applications.

2. Increased corrosion: Due to the existence of grooves, corrosive substances in the pipeline are more likely to adhere to the grooves, forming hot spots, thereby aggravating the corrosion of the pipeline.

3. Difficulty in maintenance: The existence of grooves increases the surface area inside the pipeline, increases the difficulty of pipeline maintenance, and also brings certain difficulties to pipeline cleaning and repair.

In short, although seamless steel pipes can be grooved, it is necessary to comprehensively consider the characteristics of specific materials, processes, and use environments, select appropriate processing methods, and pay attention to the impact of grooves on pipe performance.
