drill collar. Typically installed between the drill pipe and the drill collar, it transmits power and applies weight on bit (WOB). Its structural features include extended joints, increased wall thickness, and externally thickened sections. Carbide-clad surfaces extend its service life. This equipment effectively reduces the risk of sticking and sticking during directional drilling and improves wellbore trajectory control accuracy.
Functions of Heavy Weight Drill Pipe:
As an integral component of the drill string, HWDP connects and transmits power within drilling tools. Its basic functions include tripping the drill bit, applying WOB, transporting drilling fluid, and handling downhole incidents. Inserting 15 to 30 HWDPs between the drill collar and the drill pipe mitigates cross-sectional variations, reduces stress concentration, prevents fatigue damage to the drill pipe, and reduces drilling tool failure rates. In addition, heavy-weight drill pipe can maintain directional well orientation and stabilize inclination, increasing the drilling depth capability of the drilling rig.

Heavy-weight drill pipe is primarily used to connect the drill bit to the drilling rig. One of its important functions is to maintain drilling stability. Due to its heavy weight, heavy-weight drill pipe provides sufficient downward force and stability, preventing the drill bit from deflecting during drilling and ensuring accurate and straight drilling.
2. Enhancing Drilling Capacity
The weight and rigidity of heavy-weight drill pipe enable it to provide greater impact force and torque when drilling into hard formations such as rock, thereby enhancing drilling capacity. This design enables the drill rig to more effectively break rock, increase penetration speed, and reduce the risk of stuck pipe.

Heavy Weight Drill Pipe Structural Features:
Heavy Weight Drill Pipe features longer joints than conventional drill pipe, providing greater wear resistance and weight, and the joint threads can be repaired multiple times. Its wall thickness is 2-3 times thicker, while the outer diameter of the pipe body and joints is the same as that of conventional drill pipe. The inner bore is flush-faced, with a diameter at least equal to the inner diameter of the drill collar. The central external thickened section acts as a small stabilizer, enhancing bending resistance. The joint surface is welded with cemented carbide, extending its service life by 4 times.
Heavy Weight Drill Pipe Applications:
1. Directional/Horizontal Wells
Friction Reduction: Replace drill collars to reduce wellbore contact area.
Flexibility Enhancement: Easier to navigate through buildup sections.
2. Deep/Ultra-Deep Wells
Force Optimization: Place an HWDP transition zone above the drill collar.
Weight Reduction Solution: Partially replacing drill collars with HWDP can reduce suspended weight by 15%.
3. Special Operating Conditions
Sulfur-Bearing Formations: Use a sulfur-resistant steel grade (such as S135-SS) to resist sulfide stress corrosion.
Highly Abrasive Formations: Double hardband design for extended service life.
Slimhole Drilling: Replace 4-3/4" drill collars with 3-1/2" HWDP to increase annular flow rate and improve cleaning efficiency.
Recommended Use:
Installate at least 15-30 HWDPs in a directional well (approximately 10% of the total drill string length).
